So I've got this thing about YA books. I don't really like reading books where the characters are an age younger than me because I like to actually imagine myself as the main protagonist most of the time... lame I know.
Well recently I've been reading a few more YA books. Some aren't really all that bad, some are awful & then there are the ones in between.
Anatomy of a Boyfriend - Daria Snadowsky
Before this all happened, the closest I'd ever come to getting physical with a guy was playing the board game Operation. Okay, so maybe that sounds pathetic, but it's not like there were any guys at my high school who I cared to share more than three words with, let alone my body.
Then I met Wes, a track star senior from across town. Maybe it was his soulful blue eyes, or maybe my hormones just started raging. Either way, I was hooked. And after a while, he was too. I couldn't believe how intense my feelings became, or the fact that I was seeing—and touching—parts of the body I'd only read about in my Gray's Anatomy textbook. You could say Wes and I experienced a lot of firsts together that spring. It was scary. It was fun. It was love.
And then came the fall.
The story involves main character Dom, her best friend Amy & Wes. Once you get through it you actually realize it's a pretty good book. It's not too long and it does have a lot of humor moments. The sex scenes are somewhat realistic and don't involve words like 'throbbing membrane' and 'love tunnel'.
The one thing though that I could not stand was Dom. The main character is a very naive person. She's a 17 year old who's never had sex and seems to suffer from what I call 'Clingy Girlfriend Syndrome'. In the beginning her and Wes' relationship is pretty sweet and they do seem to enjoy each other but she's one of those people who talks and does things just to impress her boyfriend. She's constantly thinking about what he's doing or what they'll do and it's just like .. what. I understand they're in a relationship but she makes it seem like the world literally revolves around him and that's all that matters in life.
Dom was also EXTREMELY whiny. She is in smaller terms, a spoiled brat. I wanted to seriously punch her in the face a few times while reading this. She's amazingly over dramatic and is just down right annoying. Maybe that's how all 17 year olds act. I didn't. I don't think I actually know someone in high school who did. But hey, in the end it was still a good book.
I'd give it 6 out of 10 stars.
